Homemade Lahmacun Recipe (Turkish Flatbread with Meat Topping)

 




Lahmacun, often referred to as "Turkish pizza," is a thin, crispy flatbread topped with a flavorful mixture of minced meat, fresh vegetables, and aromatic spices. This beloved street food is perfect for quick meals, family dinners, or as a show-stopping appetizer. Easy to prepare at home, lahmacun combines Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 packet (7 g) instant yeast
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the topping:

  • 300 g ground lamb or beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely diced or grated
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp red pepper paste (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and sugar.
  2. Dissolve the yeast in warm water, then mix it into the dry ingredients. Add olive oil.
  3. Knead the dough until it’s smooth and elastic. Cover and let it rise for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 2: Make the Topping

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground meat with onions, tomatoes, bell pepper, tomato paste, red pepper paste, olive oil, and spices.
  2. Stir well until all ingredients are evenly combined.

Step 3: Assemble and Cook

  1. Preheat your oven to 250°C (480°F) or use a pizza stone if available.
  2. Divide the dough into small balls (about 6–8 pieces) and roll each into a thin, round flatbread.
  3. Spread a thin layer of the meat mixture evenly over the dough.
  4. Bake in the oven for 6–8 minutes or until the edges are crispy and slightly browned.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Serve hot with a squeeze of lemon, fresh parsley, and thinly sliced onions.
  2. Roll it up and enjoy!
